Herbs

I was browsing around the old Internet the other day, and I ran across this awesome tutorial for a hanging herb planter from Under the Table and Dreaming.  I really loved the simple but surprising look of the design, so I quickly came up with plans for making one of my own. I actually found the cups at K-Mart of all places. I wanted to check thrift stores first, but, I really wanted to get the project started! I just happened to have the paint lying around, from a previous phone case painting experiment, and thought it would make a perfect sunny element to the backyard. So, some holes, two coats of spray paint and a visit with sandpaper, and this is what I ended up with! I love them and they spin just a little in the breeze, adding to the overall adorableness of the planters.

I really like how small and “out of the way” this makes the collection. I used to grow herbs inside, but, the cats kept eating them, rendering them useless! There’s a small layer of rocks at the bottom of the cup to help with drainage. I used the bright purple rocks from Button’s fish tank, natch.

The Aftermath

A couple of nights ago, we were woken up to the sound of a terrible thud followed by terrible screaming. Nate ran into Button’s room and found her bawling, on the floor. She fell out of bed, right onto her little face! There wasn’t any blood, but her face swelled up quite a bit. After trying to feel her nose to check for damage and being unsuccessful, we decided to just take her to the ER. Of course, pretty soon after we got there and got checked in, she calmed down and the doctor was able to check her out with no problems. No broken nose, but a scrape and faint twin black eyes. She kind of looks like a tiny boxer.

She seems to be doing just fine now!

Wordless Wednesday

Delays, etc

I haven’t been around much lately, what with school winding down and all, but, I did manage to get in this fun activity with Button today. I feel like we haven’t been spending much time together. I know it’s short lived, but, it still stings that I’ve been unable to give her much attention. I saw this activity on a new blog I recently started following: Tinker Lab. It’s so sweet, I love it! I remember when Button was in her first year of preschool and she was always doing these rolled marble paintings. I recognized the technique as soon as I started reading her post. Instead of using wooden eggs, I used various sizes of plastic “decor” eggs for the craft store. I left Button pick out the paint: pink, yellow and glitter. Awesome.

This is her, “Mom is letting me make a mess!!” face

She quickly got into the rhythm of things and had a blast. By the time we were done, she was rolling eight eggs around, and having an all around awesome time.

A great part of this activity is that we now have some Easter decorations that we can use every year. They turned out beautifully.

Thanks for the idea, Tinker Lab!

Break

You know, sometimes she makes me insane, but, this kid is so amazing and I love her endlessly.

New Day, Nutella

I was recently chosen by Mommy Parties to host a party based on the yummy substance known as Nutella. Honestly, I had never eaten it before. My only experience with the stuff has been watching Giada on Food Network make amazing looking crepes and sandwiches. The party pack contained some awesome looking recipes such as the “Waffle-wich.” It’s just what it sounds like! Crispy, toasty waffles with a nice chocolaty, hazelnutty goodness inside. So good! For the party, I made the waffles, and Nutella Sushi. Okay, I know that sounds awful, but I promise, there’s no fish involved. The kids got a big kick out of it. Button definitely enjoyed the thought of having chocolate for breakfast. I think we might have found a new staple in our house!

Nutella Sushi!

One of the items in the party pack was a travel mug made out of compostable plastic! How cool is that?! I love stuff that disappears all on its own. I really appreciated that one of the pieces of the goody bags was something that was not only completely useable, but something that wouldn’t just end up in a landfill.

Also, Nutella is amazing on Trefoils. Just sayin’.

P.S: Mommy Parties and Nutella provided me with free samples, but the opinions are entirely my own!

Lala

A few months ago, a new line of dolls appeared on the market called “Lalaloopsy” dolls. I instantly fell in love with them. They have faux stitching details, button eyes, and very elaborate little dresses. As much as I loved them, Button felt the opposite. She just refused to take an interest. So, sadly, the doe eyed dolls sat on the toy store shelves. Until earlier this week. Button’s best friend, Tater, is just as enthralled with the dolls as I am, and has most of the collection. The last time she came over to play, she brought some of her plastic friends along. I don’t know if it was envy or what, but Button finally caved and asked for one. I jumped at the chance and we drove to Target and we picked up “Jewel Sparkles.” As soon as we freed Miss. Sparkles from her plastic cage, I was online, looking up patterns and ideas to make her some new threads. I made her this heart print dress and I just LOVE it!  I bought the pattern at Duds for Dolls. It came together really quickly and they have other patterns and premade clothes available. So cute!

P.S: The fabric? Boxer shorts.
